Advice for College Freshman

Being a college student, I always have so much to do. From going to class to going to practice and doing homework in between, life at school can get a little stressful. Now, I’m not saying that I don’t love being away from home, because what teenager wouldn’t love it, but sometimes I wish I could be back home in the comfort of high school. But no matter what I do, I have to move on and just enjoy college, so I am here to help the next high school senior who is heading off to s

When I first left for school, the one real thing my mom told me was to always make lists. Whether it was what I needed for the next day or what I had to accomplish that week, lists were very important. So, for the seniors who will be heading off to college, here is a list of  the top 10 things that you should bring and things that you should avoid bringing:

1. A foam mattress topper. The beds are not very comfortable

2. Only clothes that you will wear. You will wear sweatpants and sweatshirts to class. Trust me

3. Enough Food to snack on. You will not want to leave your room when it is cold just to get a snack at the dinning hall

4. Lots and lots of power strips. You will have so many things to plug in and not a lot of wall space to do it

5. Headphones for when you want to drown out your roommates and their friends

6. a plate, a bowl, a cup, a reusable cup for coffe, and a ox of plastic silverware

7. a good computer (I recommend a macbook)

8. pillows and lots of blankets. When the school puts the heat on, you will want to sleep with the window open, but the breeze always keeps it a little windy in the room

9. a tide to go pen, sewing kit, and a lint roller

10. Try to avoid bringing a lot of pictures from back home. I know that you will miss your old friends, but college is a place to make a lot of new friends and if you hang up a thousand pictures, your roommates will kill you

Now I know that this may seem like nothing, and yes there is a lot more that you should bring, but just remember: make a list and relax. College seems scary and like a big step, but as long as you put your work before anything else, you will have a great time!

So Wrong, So Fast

Kim Kardashians wedding to Kris Humphries has been listed in the “Celebrity top 10 shortest marriages” on newsnet5.com. Many people believe that it was just a reality TV stunt, but Kim and all of her family promise that it was truly just a marriage then ended poorly.

Kim and Kris were married August 20th, and they seemed happier than ever. Over the summer, they were seen over and over again, still in that “honeymoon bliss”. Then, a mere 72 days later, Kim Kardashian was filing for divorce from Kris.

It came as a surprise to many people, including Kris who said “Im devastated…and willing to do whatever it takes to make things work” (People Magazine)

A source says that they are both working and going in different directions in life, and that they marriage was just too much to hold on too.

Now, as someone who enjoys watching “Keeping up with the Kardashians”, i would be so devastated to see people look down on Kim for what happened. Just because she is a celebrity does not mean that her life is perfect. Many peoples marriages end in divorce. Kim is just another person who deserves love just like everyone else.

What a Winter Wonderland

Sitting on my aunts deck in the middle of January made me realize why I love the snow. I took out my camera to capture this moment; the moment where the Connecticut river was so beautifully frozen over, and the snow and ice was shimmering from the suns rays setting as the day was coming to a close. Coming from Cape Cod, I don’t get to experience what it is like to have snow day after snow day. Sure, we get the occasional storm, or the dusting in the morning, but there is nothing like what I was experiencing while in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. As i got my camera, I had to think about the setup of my picture. I had to have the sunlight just right so it wasn’t reflecting into my lens. I wanted to capture it all so I could always remember this moment and this feeling that I knew this picture would have on my forever. As i thought about what to focus on, I realized what the most important part of this scene was: the snow. It was what inspired me to freeze this moment forever, so I tried to get as much as I could into one picture. Looking at this picture now, i see the orange sky in the background and the bare trees right in front of my eyes. It makes me feel like I’m right back on that deck looking out into a winter wonderland, making me feel like everything is perfect. I love the snow and every time I see this picture I am reminded more and more of how I can not wait for the winter to come!

La Guerre des Post-It (The Post-It War)

Ubisoft is a major video game making company that is located all over the world, but is main based from France. Recently, they needed inspiration, so they decided to post pictures of common game characters and celebrities on the windows of the company building. South Park characters, Ghostbusters, and Marilyn Monroe are just a few of the faces popping up all over the windows of Ubisoft Montreal in Paris these past few weeks.

When a local Paris bank across the street saw this, they were inspired to fight back and try to make an even better collage of post-its. Here is a quick video to show you the different pictures that both the bank and Ubisoft have been posting on their windows. So now, there is a full out post-it war, or la guerre des post-it, going on in France.

I was reading what different people were saying about all of this and one man from Paris was saying how the post-it notes gives the people of Paris an excuse to look up instead of just looking at the ground when they walk. It is giving the people effected by the economy a reason to smile on their way to work and it is something that might change their day for the better. If only we could all find something as simple as post-it notes to brighten our day and give us a reason to look up from the ground.

Abduction…

This week, I went to the movies with a couple of my friends. We decided to see the movie Abduction. Why? One because it it looked really good and two, what teenage girl doesn’t want to see a movie with Taylor Lautner.

If you don’t know what the movie is about, it is basically about a boy who thinks he knows his parents but then he finds his face on a missing children’s website. He next spends the next 24 hours living like someone on the run from the secret service, because who can he trust? No one. To find out more, click on this link to watch the trailer.

Going into this movie, I didn’t really know much, so I went in with an open mind. After watching the movie, I would give it a 2 star rating. Its not that I didn’t like the movie, it was just so predicable and Taylor Lautner is not that good of an actor. Each scene, I could guess what was going to happen and instead of being suspenseful, it was predictable.

Now, I’m not saying don’t go see it, because in the end I did enjoy the movie and I am one person and this is my opinion. You have to go and form your own opinion and experience it for yourself. Everyone does have their own opinion.

Going to the movie was a great girls night out and all in all I am glad that I got to watch the movie.

All About Me

This is my first ever blog post, and I have to tell you, I am excited. I have always read about blogs but I never really knew how to use them. Now, thanks to Professor Williams, I have the opportunity to.

My name is Amy and I attend Westfield State University. I am a freshman, and let me tell you, I love it. I thought the transition was going to be a lot harder than it was, but I think I did really well with it. I am a cheerleader and I love to sing and I hope I can get involved as much as possible this year.

Now, if you’re wondering why my name is lifeonthecape, it is because I live on Cape Cod, not just during the summer, and not just during the winter, but all year round. Some people think that is really cool, and some people think that makes me a snob, but that is not true…I just live your vacation.
